Eczema Skin Care Tips

By Cynthia Bailey MD.

There are different types of eczema. Eczema is a skin change characterized by itchy, red, scaly skin that is sometimes moist, crusty and studded with blisters. The causes of eczema vary. Some of the more common causes include:
  • hereditary eczema called atopic dermatitis
  • dry skin eczema (nummular and asteototic eczema)
  • dandruff and facial seborrheic dermatitis
  • allergic contact dermatitis (such as poison oak or nickle allergy)
  • irritant dermatitis (such as dish pan hands)

While the causes of eczema can differ, the rash manifests in similar skin changes. Eczematous skin has a weakened skin barrier and inflammation. Treatment and skin care for eczema needs to calm the inflammation and heal the barrier will improve the eczema overall. I give you tips to do both, so that your eczematous skin can heal. I also have specific information for those who are prone to atopic dermatitis, the hereditary type of eczema that is also linked to asthma, hay fever and dry sensitive skin. This common type of eczema may be dramatic or it may simply manifest in sensitive skin. If you are prone to any of these conditions, then it is helpful to know how to prevent sensitive skin problems and eczema by creating an appropriate skin care routine.
