What's new is that celebrities are talking about their rosacea.

This includes Emmy Award-winning Actress Cynthia Nixon from Sex and the City. She just created a really great series of rosacea public service announcements that you're bound to see. They are informative, really well done, and worth a look. Click here to take a peek, then come back and I'll tell you what advice I give to my dermatology patients with rosacea. Don’t let rosacea stop you. Learn how to manage your rosacea - control it instead of letting it control you. It is a 3-step process.

The 3 steps to control rosacea:

  1. celebrities with rosacea best skin care routine to heal
Find the best skin care routine for your rosacea-prone skin. Having built thousands of skin care routines for my rosacea patients over the years, I created my Rosacea Therapy Skin Care Kit with the key products to calm and control rosacea. I fit my patient's prescription medicines into this routine and it works perfectly to support rosacea control.
  2. Figure out your rosacea triggers and avoid them.
  3. See a dermatologist for treatment, if you can’t control your rosacea on your own.

In my dermatology practice I help a lot of people manage their rosacea. I even have rosacea myself and so I get to experience its capricious and inconvenient nature on my own face.

Celebrities with rosacea info from dermatologist with rosaceaI’ve written a number of self-care articles that outline what I've learned over the years from my patients' experience and my personal awareness, and I've got a few uncommon "tricks up my sleeve."  This information can help you with your rosacea. - Dermatologist and Skin Wellness Expert Dr. Cynthia Bailey

Dermatologist's rosacea advice and information

Read my Rosacea Article Series.

My in-depth rosacea series starts with the article titled What is Rosacea?. The various articles cover rosacea symptoms, trigger factors, the rosacea skin care routine I recommend for my patients, natural treatments, and prescription treatments for rosacea.

Learn about face mites.

If you have rosacea, you may well have a robust population of demodex mites in your pores and they may play a role in your rosacea. Yup, mites!  They're normal, but you can have a few or a lot. In rosacea there's often quite a crowd of them.  Read about it in my post titled Demodex Mites and Rosacea Treatments and Causes.

Tackle the rosacea holy grail - clogged pores, oily skin AND rosacea.

The combination of rosacea, oily skin, and clogged pores is common and very tricky to treat. I have a very detailed post on how I approach it. You'll see some advice that isn't found elsewhere and it works; I use it all the time in my practice with great results but, it's not for everyone with rosacea. The post is titled Best Products for Rosacea, Oily Skin and Blackheads.

best skin care to heal rosacea

Your skin care routine is a make-it-or-break-it habit for your rosacea. This makes me very particular about the products I recommend for my rosacea patients. It's important to think of ever product that you use on your face. You want a complete and comprehensive skin care routine that supports healing rosacea-prone skin. I call this Complete Skin Care for rosacea and my Rosacea Therapy Skin Care Kit is an excellent example specifically for rosacea-prone complexions. The skin care routine that I use for almost all my rosacea patients includes specific products for these key steps in a skin care routine:

  1. CLEANSE: It's important not to overly dry or irritate your skin with cleansers.
  2. CORRECT: It's important to use a product that can sooth inflammation and I've seen the best results with the combo of high-concentration green tea and caffeine.
  3. HYDRATE: Dry and irritated skin is prone to rosacea flare ups, so finding the right face cream is important.
  4. PROTECT: Sun exposure flares rosacea for many people, but sunscreens can be irritating. I recommend wearing non-irritating mineral zinc oxide sunscreen every day.
  5. Makeup: Flare ups of rosacea can be covered, but you need a makeup that's not irritating. This is why I recommend mineral makeup as the best choice for rosacea.

best cleansers for rosacea

CLEANSE facial skin twice daily using a very gentle and hypoallergenic product designed for sensitive complexions. The best options include alternating a pH balanced gentle cleanser with a pyrithione zinc product using tepid water and your fingertips.

Calming zinc soap for rosaceaCalming Zinc® Soap is fortified with pyrithione zinc to fight rosacea in a natural base that is glycerin-rich and extremely gentle. It contains the highest amount of pyrithione zinc to help reduce the population of Pityrosporum yeast on your skin. This yeast often overgrows the pores of people with rosacea and I’ve found that treating it helps to gain control of rosacea.

best pH balanced face cleanser for sensitive skinExtremely Gentle Foaming Facial Cleanser is a pH balanced soap-less synthetic cleanser that gently cleanses skin without irritation.

Most rosacea patients need to use both of these cleansers because the pyrithione zinc in the Calming Zinc Soap can be drying. I have my patients start using the Calming Zinc once a day in the evening. They wash with the Extremely Gentle Cleanser in the morning.

dermatologist's non-prescription tips to heal rosacea

CORRECT rosacea inflammation with Green Tea Antioxidant Skin Therapy. This is the absolute best anti-inflammatory/antioxidant product to help heal rosacea-prone skin. I think everyone with rosacea should use the product twice a day.  Green Tea Antioxidant Skin Therapy contains an extremely high concentration of pharmaceutical grade green tea antioxidants together with caffeine and it is a magic combo for rosacea control. I have my patients apply it twice a day immediately after washing. They apply their prescription products on top. (One needs to clear that advice with their treating physician).

best redness relief kit for rosaceaThe combination of Green Tea with Calming Zinc are the two most effective skin care steps I've found for rosacea and that's why I’ve put them together in my Facial Redness Relief Kit.

best face cream for rosacea

HYDRATE your facial skin every day. It's important because the skin barrier is damaged when you have rosacea. It will only heal if you maintain skin moisture and lipid content by using a really good skin cream. Yep, just about everyone with rosacea needs a soothing face cream to maintain the right amount of skin moisture. Avoid products with anti-aging ingredients, fragrances or strong essential oils. These ingredients can be irritating.

Pick your moisturizer based on your skin type and apply it after your Green Tea. Two safe and healing face creams that I use to create skin care routines for my rosacea patients include Daily Moisturizing Face Cream for Oily to Normal Skin and Daily Moisturizing Face Cream for Dry to Normal Skin. Both are fragrance free, light-textured but rich in skin barrier healing and water holding ingredients. I combine Calming Zinc, Green Tea Antioxidant Therapy and your choice of Daily Face Cream in my Facial Flaking and Redness Solutions Kit.

PROTECT your facial skin from UV rays because they trigger rosacea. Use only mineral zinc oxide-based sunscreen because it is non-irritating to sensitive rosacea-prone complexions. You need to wear mineral broad spectrum sunscreen every day. Yep, the sun triggers rosacea and sun protection is a key step in controlling your rosacea. Pick your product based on your product preference and skin type:

best sunscreen for rosacea prone complexions

Sheer Strength Pure Physical™ Tinted Matte Sunscreen, SPF 30

By far and away the best sunscreen for rosacea is Sheer Strength Pure Physical Matte Tinted Sunscreen. It is completely non-irritating, protecting your skin with a combination of zinc oxide, titanium dioxide and iron oxide. Yes, iron oxide. This ingredient helps reduce exposure to visible and blue light from your digital devices.

The gentle tinting blends into all skin tones, even really fair complexions. It helps to soften complexion flaws. Even men love it because the tinting does NOT look like makeup but instead softens redness, complexion flaws and helps reduce digital screen light exposure. Plus, the matte base absorbs excess oil making this the top choice for oily rosacea-prone skin. This is the product I wear daily on my fair skin.

best powder sunscreen for rosacea

Sheer Strength Pure Physical SPF Refresh Powder Sunscreen SPF 50

Reapply sunscreen during prolonged exposure to reduce UV-triggered rosacea flare ups using powder sunscreen. Powder sunscreen is easy to pack in your purse or pocket, convenient to apply over sunscreen or makeup and gives you necessary reapplication protection from harmful UV rays. The mineral protection blocks UV and the iron oxide tinting gives you visible and digital light protection.

best water resistant sunscreen for rosacea

Sheer Strength Pure Physical Water Resistant SPF 50 Sunscreen

When you need tenacious sunscreen for sweaty and wet activities, be certain to use only pure mineral protection. Chemical sunscreens often irritate sensitive rosacea-prone skin so avoid them! My pure mineral Sheer Strength Water Resistant sunscreen is rosacea-friendly and comes in an economical 6 oz container.

The bottom line with celebs with rosacea:

Many actors, actresses and other famous people have rosacea so you are in good company. They undoubtedly use a skin care routine recommended by their dermatologist to control this vexing complexion problem. My Rosacea Therapy Skin Care Kit is a dermatologist-created skin care routine and it is what my rosacea patients use. It's also what I've used myself for the many years that I've struggled with rosacea-prone skin.

Remember, if you can't control your rosacea by avoiding trigger factors and using the right skin care products then it's time to see a dermatologist. There are topical and oral medicines that a dermatologist can prescribe or you. In my practice these fit nicely into this skin care routine and they help provide relief from this capricious, but common facial skin rash.
