Exfoliation is an important part of almost everyone’s skin care routine after puberty. Once the velvety smooth skin of youth is replaced by a thicker and more sebaceous complexion it takes work to keep skin smooth and soft and pores clean.
Who is exfoliation good for?
- People struggling with blackheads and clogged pores from acne.
- Anyone using an anti-aging skin care routine and wants to instantly take years off your skin’s appearance with a quick exfoliation treatment.
- If you want a simple way to maintain a smooth and bright complexion.
How often should you exfoliate?
Exfoliating two or three times a week helps to fight the build-up of dull dead cells. All your treating and correcting products will penetrate better because dead cells and debris act as a barrier to product actives. Get the best results with your skin care products when you add exfoliation to your skin care routine.
When patients and customers ask me to tell them ‘how to get smooth skin again’, I explain that it is this buildup of dead skin cells (stratum corneum) layered with trapped oil, makeup, dirt and retained old product residue that is making their skin rougher and duller than normal. Exfoliation instantly removes this ‘smutz’, as I call it, to reveal an instantly brighter, more luminous complexion. Because all this ‘schmutz’ will start building up again, twice or thrice a week exfoliation is necessary to keep skin looking young and healthy.
My Bamboo and Clay Exfoliating Facial Scrub is ideal for all but the most sensitive skin. I have found that even people with facial rashes such as seborrhea can benefit from exfoliating away the loose flakes that cling embarrassingly to the skin. It’s important to gently exfoliate though if you have sensitive skin. Gauge your use of exfoliating products by your skin’s sensitivity and never overdo it. One other word of caution, don’t apply products with potentially irritating ingredients like glycolic acid, Retin-A or vitamin C for at least 12 hours after exfoliating if you have any skin sensitivity!

Once or twice a week apply a small amount to wet skin. Very gently massage the Bamboo and Clay Scrub in a circular motion onto your wet skin. Many complexions achieve the ideal exfoliation in as little as 5 to 10 seconds of massage.Tougher complexions may benefit from up to 1 or 2 minutes of gentle massage. You will feel the soothing warmth as the clay cleanses your pores.
Rinse well with warm water and towel dry. Be careful to avoid contact with eyes. This wonderful scrub is easiest to use in the shower and can be applied to the neckline as well.
Sensitive complexions, such as those with rosacea or eczema, may want to use this scrub regionally on the tougher places on their facial skin only to brighten their complexion; they may want to massage very gently, or not at all, on those more sensitive places on their face. Know that you will feel the exfoliation and can control it with the amount of pressure and the amount of time that you massage your skin.
Another tip is that the bamboo beads in this scrub will settle with gravity. This allow you to control how efficiently the product exfoliates.
- If you stand the tube up on its cap, the beads will settle to the opening and the product will exfoliate more effectively.
- If you lay the tube on its side, the beads will stratify more uniformly into the scrub’s clay base and the exfoliation will be gentler.
The choice is yours. I personally like the scrub best when the beads are dense. I store my product standing up on the cap. This means that the beads are used quickly and the last bit of product in the tube has fewer beads. Because it takes very little product to get a good exfoliation, my tube still lasts a long time. Once the bead density has diminished a lot, I start on a new tube. The choice is yours and you can adjust the exfoliating characteristics of this lovely scrub to fit your needs.
