COSMETICS FOR MEN
By Cynthia Bailey MD.
Find the best products to look natural yet hide complexion flaws or enhance your natural features - whether you are a man or a woman.
You may think of "makeup" when you think of cosmetics, but the term “cosmetic” is not synonymous with makeup when it is used in a dermatologic context. Dermatologists use products to camouflage complexion flaws such as acne scars, uneven skin pigmentation problems, under eye circles, excess oily sheen, facial redness and more.
For example, the tinting in sunscreen can help to soften old acne scars or skin hyperpigmentation problems such as melasma or sun spots. Mineral powder can be used to reduce oily facial shine. And, with a slight warm tone, it can also be used across the apples of the cheeks to add vitality to a sallow complexion. Subtle mauve powder placed along the lash line will naturally bring out a person’s eyes.
Men benefit as much as women from judiciously-used cosmetic products – whether to camouflage skin problems or enhance facial features.
Popular cosmetic products for men in my dermatology practice include:
Sheer Strength Pure Mineral Tinted Matte Sunscreen. The tinting blends well with all complexion skin-tones. The base is mattifying, meaning it helps to reduce oil-shine.
A dusting of Loose Mineral Powder helps to reduce oil shine with kaolin clay.
EltaMD Clear Tinted Sunscreen is another favorite sunscreen for oily-to-normal complexions. EltaMD Daily Tinted is great for normal to drier complexions.
Suntegrity SPF 30 5 in 1 BB Cream is a multitasking product that moisturizers, sun protects and has tinting to soften complexion flaws. It’s hypoallergenic and non-irritating for even the most sensitive skin.
You can also warm up a sallow complexion with Avene Self Tanner.
