What causes Lip Lines?
By Cynthia Bailey MD. This page was updated on Wed, Nov 06, 2019
Vertical wrinkles around the mouth are dynamic wrinkles, also called smoker’s lines, because of the dynamic pursing action of sucking on a cigarette for years.
Smoking is not necessary for the lines, but pursing and movement of the very dynamic mouth is. The muscles under the skin around the lips (called the perioral area of your face) encircle your mouth. When you whistle, pucker your lips, talk, sip from a straw etc., these muscles contract and wrinkle the overlying skin. Over time, as skin thins, the wrinkles are etched into the skin. At first they are fine. Eventually they deepen. Hence, they are caused by dynamic muscular movement.
How to reduce wrinkles around the mouth?
Best skin care products and creams to reduce lip lines.

How do you get rid of lip lines fast?
Skin serums and creams that plump skin get rid of lip lines fast.
Holding water in the layers of your skin gives immediate results. Use products rich in hyaluronic acid (which can hold 1000 times its weight in water!), sodium PCA (also called NaPCA, part of your skin’s Natural Moisturizing Factor) and glycerin. These act like sponges to hold water into your skin immediately. The best choice is my Instantly Luminous Multi-Action Serum that is rich in these 3 water binding ingredients.
Exfoliate and brighten skin to get rid of lip lines fast.
Brighten skin immediately to create a dewy, reflective glow, and the deep shadows in lip lines will be less noticeable.
- Use physical exfoliation with my Bamboo and Clay Thermal Exfoliation Scrub twice a week.
- Use physical and chemical exfoliation by using my Triple Action Exfoliation Cleanser as a daily face wash. Add an Exfoliating Face Sponge if you have tolerant skin.
- Get powerful chemical exfoliation when you use my Retinol Anti-Wrinkle Night Cream and/or Glycolic Acid Face Cream. These ingredients both help stimulate collagen and exfoliate skin.
Sun protection helps prevent lip lines.
Skin thins over your lifetime primarily from sun exposure. Prevent additional skin thinning with the use of daily broad spectrum sunscreen. Don’t go outside without it! The best protection comes from mineral zinc oxide broad spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen worn every day. If you wear makeup, dust pure mineral makeup powder on top for additional scattering of UV rays. We won’t say it is a sunscreen, but it helps your sunscreen to work better.
Why are women more prone to lip lines (smoker’s lines) than men?
A women’s skin is thinner. Also, men shave daily and this has been shown to help thicken skin and reduce the risk of wrinkles over time.

Dermatologist's advice to help you pick the right products for your skin to fight lip lines
On my products you will notice blue, green and oranges bands on each of my product labels. These help you understand which product are better tolerated by sensitive skin and which products have ingredients that may be tricky for some skin types.
A BLUE BAND means that even people with the most sensitive skin are usually able to tolerate these products.
AN ORANGE BAND means that the ingredients may can be irritating for some people. These would include ingredients such as glycolic acid, salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide, retinol etc. You need to think about how your skin might tolerate these ingredients.
A GREEN BAND means the formulation is often made with organic ingredients and is natural overall.
