Dermatologist explains the best ingredients in skin care products to treat acne?

Let me simplify your search for the best acne treatment products: there are really only 5 non-prescription acne fighting ingredients that work to treat acne. Use as many of these 5 ingredients as your skin can tolerate to get the best results. I have products with one or two of these powerful ingredients. I have kits that contain more.
My acne products are all hypoallergenic because they contain no added allergen ingredients, such as fragrances.

My acne treatment products are what you would expect from a dermatologist. They treat your acne with proven medicines:

  • at levels that work to stop acne
  • combined in treatment kits specifically designed for sensitive skin or tough oily skin
  • present in products that work together to get rid of your acne problems

You can't get stronger acne medicine without a prescription! I know because I have treated thousands of people with acne in my dermatology practice. I have found my kits more effective at treating acne than all but the most powerful prescription medicines.

The 5 most effective ingredients in acne fighting products are:

  1. Benzoyl peroxide (which treats blackheads and C. acnes, the bacteria that causes acne)
  2. Salicylic acid (which penetrates oily pores to help unclog them to fight blackheads)
  3. Glycolic acid (which helps fight blackheads and heal acne scars)
  4. Retinoids (such as retinol, which helps heal acne scars the same way it helps fight fine lines and wrinkles, and fights blackheads)
  5. Pyrithione zinc (which helps fight Pityrosporum yeast that plays a role in Pityrosporum folliculitis type of acne)

I give you acne care products with all 5 of these ingredients at levels that work to stop acne. You can choose which products fit your skin type and build a skin care routine that clears acne but does not overly dry or irritate your skin.

How do you know which acne ingredients will irritate sensitive skin?

All acne products can irritate sensitive skin. Ingredients that unclog blackheads are notoriously irritating. These products contain ingredients called 'keratolytics' because they break down keratin plugs. These plugs are the first step in forming a pimple. Keratolytic ingredients include benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, and glycolic acid. If you have sensitive skin, start with the lowest-strength products and work up as your skin becomes more tolerant of these powerful and important acne-fighting ingredients.

Some acne treatment ingredients can be allergens. Salicylic acid in particular can cause skin allergies in some people. The products I carry with salicylic acid have detailed instructions to help people determine if they are allergic to this potent ingredient. It's rare that a person can also be allergic to benzoyl peroxide and zinc pyrithione. A use test can help to determine that, and I describe how to do this on my acne kit pages.

How to prevent acne scars:

The only way to prevent acne scars it to get rid of acne, and Dr. Bailey Skin acne treatment products and Ultimate Acne Treatment Kits include the strongest levels of the best acne medicines available. I designed them to be the best acne treatment products you can buy without a prescription.

Help heal acne scars using a retinoid such as my Retinol Cream at night. Retinol works to stimulate your skin's collagen renewal process to help acne scars in the same way it helps reduce fine lines and wrinkles. As a retinoid, it will also help fight blackheads and is related to Retin A, which is an excellent acne treatment medicine.

Block UV rays to prevent acne scar hyperpigmentation (called post inflammatory hyperpigmentation). Use one of my sunscreens to protect your skin from UV rays.
