FACIAL MOISTURIZERS, SERUMS & FACE CREAMS

By Cynthia Bailey MD. This page was updated on Sun, Sep 15, 2019

These are the best facial skin care products both soothe and protect delicate facial skin.

These face creams and serums include moisturizers for oily or acne-prone skin, normal skin, and extremely dry skin.

What are facial moisturizers?

dermatologist recommended best facial moisturizersFacial skin moisturizers are face creams and other products that hold moisture in your skin. They serve the step of 'hydrate' in the Dr. Bailey Complete Skin Care Routine℠  The secret is to find the right one for your other facial skin treatment products, and that matches your skin type. The idea is that the product holds water in the layers of your skin to balance skin hydration.

Some facial moisturizers are creams, some are lotions and others are oils. These hold water by preventing evaporation of moisture that your skin absorbed when your cleansed it. You can also use humectant ingredients that bind water without oils.

What are the best oil-free products to hydrate your skin?

Use products with ingredients such as,

  • glycerin,
  • hyaluronic acid,
  • sodium PCA (NaPCA), which is part of your skin's natural moisturizing factor (NMF).

I like to keep facial moisturizing simple with a focus on moisturizing first. Most facial creams try to do too much and fail, which is why you may have many unfinished jars of face cream in your bathroom. I recommend that you pick your therapeutic, professional skin treatment products aimed at correcting your skin problems first! These fit the 'Correct' step in a Dr. Bailey Complete Skin Care Routine. Then let your moisturizer hydrate your skin and balance skin moisture where you need it.

That's why at Dr. Bailey Skin Care I have skin treatment kits with professional level ingredients to correct your skin problems. I also have hypoallergenic, highly effective moisturizers to use with these products to hydrate your skin. Pick your moisturizer based on your skin type and product preference.

The best facial moisturizer needs to work with the products you use to correct your skin problems.

I want you to 'dial in' the amount of moisturizer that your unique skin needs - where it needs it - while you use the professional-strength skin treatment products to correct your skin problems. Pick your face cream to match your extremely dry skin, normal skin, or oily and acne-prone skin, and pick your skin treatment products based on your skin problems or goals.

This way your facial moisturizing cream won't fight with your skin treatment or skin problem, and you won't compromise your skin treatment because of your moisturizing needs.

Dr. Bailey Complete Skin CAreMy Dr. Bailey Complete Skin Care Routine℠ contains the 4 essential, yet separate, skin care steps:

  1. CLEANSE
  2. CORRECT
  3. HYDRATE
  4. PROTECT

Pick your moisturizer based on your skin type, or even the regional moisture needs of the different parts of your face (notice your T-zone is oilier and your non-T-zone is drier??). You may need more hydration on the sides of your face than on the T-zone. You may need a different skin moisturizer in winter than in summer. Think about your skin's hydration needs, and use your moisturizer to 'dial in' hydration to balance your complexion. Here are some of the ways I make this choice:

best facial moisturizers for healthy skinIf you have dry skin that is not prone to acne, consider my Natural ButterNatural Lotion, or my Daily Face Cream for Dry to Normal Skin.

If you have oily or acne-prone skin, consider my Daily Face Cream for Oily to Normal Skin.

If you have really oily skin, you may be your own skin moisturizer, especially on your T-zone. You may not actually need to apply a face moisturizer! You may also find that one of your 'Correct' products, such as the Green Tea Anti-Oxidant Cream, or your 'Protect' sunscreen product provides enough water-holding capacity to serve two skin care steps.

Did you know that there are 'smart' ingredients in skin moisturizing creams that bind water without leaving an oily feel?

Some of the best are hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and PCA that I mentioned above. These are almost magical hydrators from which everyone can benefit. They help to plump fine lines and wrinkles and create a dewy, youthful complexion almost instantly.

These hydrators are the basis of my Instantly Luminous Serum™. Apply my serum before your other treatment products, and see the difference that this state-of-the-art skin care chemistry can make in how your skin looks and feels. These ingredients bind moisture without any oil, and are ideal for all complexion types.

At Dr. Bailey Skin Care, I believe you can get amazing results from using my professional skin treatment products, and from building your unique, Dr. Bailey Complete Skin Care Routine℠ with supporting products, like the right facial moisturizer.

Why are skin moisturizing products sometimes so confusing?

Because many companies make facial moisturizers that try to do too much and fail. Most of the time I find that it is a 'jack-of all-trades-master-of-none' moisturizer that is the wrong product for a person's skin care routine. I've seen patients with rosacea struggling because they are using a moisturizer that's also an ineffective anti-aging face cream. I've seen acne-prone skin break out with heavy anti-aging "moisturizers" and oily complexion with clogged pores for the same reason. Does any of this sound familiar? Keep it simple. Pick products to correct your skin problems and dial in skin hydration with your moisturizer where you need it.
