How to get rid of brown age spots on the body.

Dermatologists creams, cleansers and treatment tips to lighten age spots on the arms, hands and body.

Find skin care products that actually lighten and get rid of age spots at any age.

What are brown age spots?

There are 2 different types of brown 'age spots',

  1. Liver spots (solar lentigines, or solar lentigo when there is just one). These are freckles caused by years of sun exposure. The skin has produced excess pigment in the living layer of the skin called the epidermis. That pigment is held in the layers of cells, including the dead cell layer called the stratum corneum.
  2. Seborrheic keratosis, which some people call barnacles. In these age spots, the living and dead cells of the epidermis and stratum corneum are excessively thick and they hold a lot of pigment. These lesions are often crusty, hence the name barnacle!

What is the best way to get rid of brown age spots on the body at home?

These two common lesions are a result of the brown melanin pigment being over-produced and then held on the skin. With seborrheic keratosis, there is also a tenacious, thick layer of dead cells forming a crusty surface of brown scale.

I recommend using exfoliation with shower cloths, sponges, or exfoliating body scrubs to remove the dead cells when you bathe.

Then apply a moisturizer with glycolic acid. This is a keratolytic ingredient that helps dissolve the 'glue' holding the dead cells together. It will help you to better remove the pigment and scale of these age spots when you exfoliate in the shower or bath. Glycolic acid also helps to lighten skin pigment to fade the age spots.

The best products for getting rid of brown age spots on the body, arms, hands and legs are professional-strength glycolic acid creams and lotions.

When you use glycolic acid creams and lotions after your shower you will also be hydrating your skin. This is important for keeping the skin supple so that scale does not build-up and darken the age spots. My two Ultra-Fast Body Smoothing Kits work well to help get rid of age spots. My Ultra-Fast Body Smoothing Triple Action Kit has a beautiful foaming glycolic and salicylic acid cleanser, the Salux exfoliating shower cloth, and my professional strength Glycolic Body Lotion.  This is what I use to fight age spots on my own 60+ year old skin!  If you are allergic to salicylic acid, use my Ultra-Fast Body Smoothing AHA Kit which contains only glycolic acid products with the Salux cloth.  This skin care routine is strong and most people use it twice a week. Alternate the products with gentle, hypoallergenic skin cleansers and moisturizers. I give you options on the page below.

Sun protection is important for lightening age spots on the body.

The sun's UV rays will darken brown age spots. Protect your skin using UPF 50 fabric and broad spectrum zinc oxide sunscreens with an SPF 30 or higher every day.
