What is hyaluronic acid and how can it help your skin? Hyaluronic acid is a trending ingredient in skin care for good reason. It has the greatest capacity to hold water; it is better than any other natural or synthetic polymer. Applied topically, hyaluronic acid rapidly penetrates skin, binds water and plumps loose, crepey and wrinkled skin to a dewy and more youthful appearance. Many creams and serums contain it. Because hyaluronic acid absorbed into skin breaks down within 12 hours, twice daily application of hyaluronic acid products is recommended.

On my new ingredient page, I explain the important aspects of hyaluronic acid in skin care such as:

How is hyaluronic acid used in skin care?

What are the benefits of hyaluronic acid?

Learn how to understand hyaluronic acid like a pro. It’s a great ingredient that instantly transforms skin – yep, no waiting. Apply a really good hyaluronic acid product, and it instantly begins to plump and hydrate skin. It feels great on your skin, too.

Does hyaluronic acid have any side effects or risks?

Not really. But it can increase penetration of other skin ingredients layered on your skin at the same time. Hyaluronic acid has the word “acid” in the name, but it is not an acid in terms of what you expect from skin care acids. Hyaluronic acid is not an exfoliator or skin lightener like glycolic acid. It does not treat acne like salicylic acid. It is not a skin irritant like these two acids.

The bottom line is that hyaluronic acid is a great skin care ingredient. In fact, hyaluronic acid is one of my favorite skin care ingredients.
