Healthy Skin Tips from Dermatologist, Dr. Cynthia Bailey
Bras don’t need to be washed as frequently as underpants unless you are sweating a lot or prone to intertrigo
(the infection of skin folds). It is important that your bras allow the folds of your skin underneath your breasts to breathe to help prevent skin infection with yeast.
It is also important to realize that sweat in the fold will leach out detergent residue, fragrance in laundry care products and other chemicals that can cause a rash, or worse yet, life-long allergy to common modern chemicals such as elastic.
How you care for your bras matters.
With this in mind, what is the best laundry care for your bras?
Wash bras weekly using hypoallergenic laundry care soap without fragrance.
My favorite sensitive skin laundry soap for garments held close to skin and kept moist by sweat is my All Natural All Purpose Cleaner Concentrate. It is the ideal laundry care soap when it comes to minimizing allergen, chemical and fragrance exposure. Even soaps designed for delicate fabrics are often loaded with fragrance. Unfortunately, these are elegant, but they contain allergens, too!
Rinse all the soap residue out of the fabric well.
If you are washing bras in the washing machine, don't pack the machine full of clothing because you won't get a thorough rinsing. If your machine has an optional, second rinse cycle, use it to really rinse your bras well.
Avoid bleach and hot drier settings on elastic garments. This breaks down the elastic quickly causing exposure of your skin to elastic chemicals.
Avoid using fabric softeners or anti-static drier sheets. These can leave fragrance and chemical residue on the fabric of your bras.
Bras Need Special Care, Too!
You may not think about how your bras can affect your skin, but they can contain allergens that cause skin irritations. Wash your bras on a weekly basis using the tips above. Your skin will thank you, and your bras will always be fresh and ready for whatever your day may bring!
