The Mysteries Surrounding Rosacea

The Mysteries Surrounding Rosacea

Mysteries of Rosacea

Rosacea impacts more than 16 million Americans, according to the National Rosacea Society (NRS). In fact, I am one of the million that deal with it. Still, most people don’t realize they have it. It’s a somewhat challenging issue since it is not entirely black and white in either the definition or treatment of it.

According to actress Cynthia Nixon speaking on behalf of the National Rosacea Coalition:

Rosacea not only affects the skin but the confidence of sufferers and from my own personal experience I know how debilitating its effects can be.

Redness is one specific characteristic of rosacea that could appear on various sections of the face including the cheeks, nose, and chin. This physical characteristic is one of the symptoms that can take a toll on the self-esteem of rosacea victims. But, incidentally, some people that don’t have redness may also have rosacea. This is why it can be tricky to identify, and even harder to treat.

Another mystery surrounding rosacea is the fact that there are no specific reasons as to why people get it. We do, however, know that the regulation of blood flow to the skin in rosacea is abnormal. In other words, people that have rosacea have an abnormal “vasomotor” response of their facial capillaries to hot environments and other flushing stimuli, leading to easy and frequent flushing. Studies have also shown that demodex mites and intestinal bacteria are culprits for causing rosacea, but again, the links are not black and white.

What’s more, rosacea is a lifelong skin condition that requires constant management - there is no cure!

Though mysterious and challenging, those of us that suffer from it can fortunately get relief. In order to effectively treat it, you have to understand the condition itself and how it impacts you.

Rosacea, like many other skin conditions, is a real issue that, as we learned above, impacts millions. It can be painful, both physically and emotionally. But, we want to change this, and the first method of treatment is education. We’ve created a guide that details what I’ve learned from my personal experience with rosacea combined with more than 25 years of seeing it in my dermatology practice. Using myself as a human test lab, I have found not only products and skin care regiments that produce real results, but I also have found that lifestyle changes and activities such as diet and exercise impact positive results as well.
