What is a true Mediterranean Diet?
And, how can you capture it at home without living in Sicily or Crete, where it all started?
A true Mediterranean diet is not pasta and pizza. It is what was eaten in Greece and southern Italy prior to 1960. Processed food was not abundant, nor was meat or cheese. The diet was proportionally weighted to seasonal plant foods including local wild greens, herbs, vegetables, nuts, seeds, potatoes, cereals and rustic whole grain breads. Fresh fruit, such as figs, grapes and pomegranates were the typical dessert. Olive oil was the main fat and dairy was yogurt and cheese. Fish and poultry were eaten in moderation only. They ate zero to four eggs per week and red meat was a rarity. The diet was rich in antioxidants, fiber and Omega 3 fatty acids.
I have advocated the Mediterranean diet for years as part of my treatment of inflammatory skin conditions including acne, psoriasis, rosacea, eczema etc. In my observations, the diet works to lower physiologic inflammation driving inflammatory skin conditions. I also live in Northern California and eat a Mediterranean diet here at home to control my own body’s physiological tendency for arthritis, psoriasis, rosacea and musculoskeletal inflammation.
